| The Custom Home Building Process: Specifications
Once you have a set of house plans selected, it is time to pick out the finish items. Many of the technical selections that are necessary to build your home will be made by your building contractor. Most homeowners do not have the knowledge or time to make these decisions. Therefore, it is very important that you choose an experienced and reliable builder.
The most important selections for the client to make are the finish items. The finish items are the selections that truly customize your custom home. These include the faucets, fixtures, appliances, etc. Many clients have an idea of what general types of finish items they want. Once a relative level of desired trim out is determined, a reasonable allowance can be set for these items. The final selections of these items will be made as we progress into the building process. However, we do ask that these selections be made early enough that there is sufficient time to order and receive the items.
At Build Ex, our allowances are very generous. We pass along our actual prices to the client so you can get much more from our budgets that you can with other builders' "retail price" budgets. We utilize local and national suppliers to help our clients get the best prices. We do not give unreasonably low allowances in order to keep our upfront building quotes lower. Our goal is for your allowance to be sufficient for you to get the items you want in your home.
